Traditional Assessment TCM Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history ( about 3,000 to 5,000 years ago )of diagnosis and treatment that detects subtle imbalances that form before disease appears, for that reason it is called preventative medicine. TCM consists of the 4 pillars of diagnosis which are touch, sight, sound and smell. TCM feels the pulses, looks at the tongue, face and eyes, listens to sounds and voice, and smell. During pulse diagnosis the practitioner feels for subtle quality differences in the six pulse positions detecting the state of qi in the 12 meridians and organs.
During the tongue diagnosis the practitioner looks for changes in the tongues shape, color, moisture content, and tongue fur or coating to detect the state of qi. While looking at the patients eyes and listening to the voice and other sounds the practitioner is able to detect the health and quality of the mind or spirit and the level of the patients vitality. Through the sense of smell one can also detect for imbalances through the skin, breath, and other orifices.
Moxi-bustion is an Asian healing modality that utilizes “heat” to gather qi, tonify and strengthen the qi level affecting an organ or network of organs. Often used in conditions where aversion to cold, accumulation of fluids, or palpated areas feel cool are presenting symptoms. The photo on the Left illustrates the use of Moxibustion, for a weakness in digestion and is used to strengthen the Stomach and Spleen meridians
Cupping is an Asian healing modality that utilizes suction to pull out toxins from the body, and dissolve scar tissue. The photo on the Right illustrates the combined therapies of Cupping and Qigong energy healing.
